Six Benchmarks for Perfect Posts
In traditional print media, a 7” x 10” ad is always a 7” x 10” ad. But social media and other online channels often make it hard to know the “right” message length for optimal effectiveness – especially since each new channel that emerges has its own rules.
Here’s a helpful overview from the content experts at Buffer, covering many of today’s most powerful online marketing tools:
Tweets: 71-100 characters. Tweets shorter than 100 characters increase engagement by 17%.
Facebook Posts: 40 characters. Short really is sweet, boosting engagement rates by 86% over longer posts.
Hashtags: 6 characters. Best practices include avoiding spaces or special characters, steering clear of slang and never starting with a number.
LinkedIn Posts: 25 words. Posts of 21-25 words get the most shares among consumers, while 16-25 word posts score with business pros.
YouTube Videos: 3 minutes. Varied studies each show top YouTube videos clocking in at three minutes or less.
Blog Posts: 6 words for headlines, 1,600 words total. Readers often see only the first three and last three words of a headline, while posts that take about seven minutes to read tend to do best.
